In the early 1980s, there was basically no concept of masterbatch in the plastics field; with the progress of the plastics industry, masterbatch gradually entered the plastics field. The plastic masterbatch is a concentrated product made by loading the plastic additives in the resin at a super constant amount; when manufacturing plastic products, it is not necessary to add the plastic additives, but only the corresponding masterbatch. Therefore, it is one of the most important forms of application of plastic additives in the world today. Its advantages are: simple process, convenient use, easy to realize production automation, increase labor productivity, avoid environmental pollution, and be conducive to clean and civilized production of workers' health.

Subsequently, the masterbatch has been classified by more applications, and currently there are dozens of kinds. The main categories are: 1. Filler masterbatch; 2. Color masterbatch; 3. Flame retardant masterbatch; 4. Polyolefin stabilized masterbatch; 5. Functional masterbatch; 6. Other special masterbatch and so on.

The term functional masterbatch resides in the later development of the plastic industry and the particularity of the application of plastic products, so it is a general term for materials that can meet the needs of a special condition in plastic products or plastic processing. Such as: flame-retardant masterbatch, water-absorbing masterbatch, anti-static masterbatch, open masterbatch, anti-fogging masterbatch, high temperature masterbatch, low temperature masterbatch, whitening masterbatch, brightening masterbatch, toughening masterbatch, etc. .

Strictly speaking, the masterbatch should belong to the scope of the functional masterbatch, but since the original role of the masterbatch is to change the color of the plastic, a professional term "masterbatch" is given to it. It is a mixture of resin and a large amount of pigments (up to 50%) or dyes to make a high concentration color. Mixing a small amount of color masterbatch with uncolored resin during processing can achieve the colored resin or product with the designed pigment concentration. The advantages of using color masterbatch in plastics are: no environmental pollution, simple coloring, accurate measurement, easy dispersion, etc.
