On the one hand, fully biodegradable plastics are too expensive. Take PBAT and PLA as examples. The price of PBAT is more than 20,000 yuan/ton, and the price of PLA is more than 30,000 yuan/ton. Recently, it has risen outrageously, even reaching 40,000-50,000. yuan / tonne. Terminal enterprises are basically too much to eat, and consumers are also very troubled. This kind of fully degradable plastic bag is about 1 yuan in the hands of consumers.

On the other hand, both light-degradable plastics and water-degradable plastics can meet the degradation requirements, and the cost is only half of the total biodegradability.

Photodegradation is to add photosensitizers (such as benzophenone, p-benzoquinone, etc.) to ordinary plastics such as PP and PE. Water degradation is to add modified starch to PP and PE to make composite materials.

However, photodegradation is limited by the intensity of light, and the degradation effect is not ideal; the starch of water-degradable plastic can be degraded, and PP and PE still pollute the soil.

In addition to the Hainan ban on plastics, which requires that ordinary plastics such as PP and PE should not be contained in degradable plastics, most of the bans on plastics in other provinces, cities and regions do not have a clear definition of degradable plastics.

In this age of mixed fish and dragons, which one is the mainstream direction?

Knowledge about the development history of the country’s ban on plastics and degradation needs to be understood:

1. Since many plastic products are not recyclable or have no recycling value, such as agricultural mulch, ultra-thin shopping bags, disposable tableware, etc., the national ban on plastics is to seize these three main contradictions.

2. In 2018, 60.42 million tons of plastic products nationwide, the highest output was plastic film, which was 11.8 million tons, accounting for 20%. The film is also the main contradiction.

3. In reality, a large amount of plastic waste is difficult to recycle and can only be absorbed by nature. Development in the direction of degradation is a practical solution. The local standard in Hainan is fully biodegradable plastic.

4. The mainstream directions of biodegradable plastics are PLA, PBAT, PBS, and PCL. In 2018, global bioplastics were 2.11 million tons, biodegradable plastics accounted for 910,000 tons, PLA approximately 220,000 tons accounted for 10.3%, PBAT approximately 150,000 tons accounted for 7.2%, and PBS approximately 97,000 tons accounted for 4.6%.

5. According to 2018 data, Europe is still the main demand market for biodegradable plastics, accounting for 55% of global demand, Asia-Pacific region accounts for 25%, and North America accounts for 19%. In 2020, most areas of China will implement a plastic ban, and domestic demand will surge.

6. The most used degradable plastic in Europe is starch-based plastics, because they did not find that there are residual and incomplete molecular degradation problems after the degradation of starch machine plastics. The United States, as a country following the development of biodegradable plastics, has been developing more PLA.

7. Some companies claim to have obtained European certification, which does not mean that they meet Hainan's standards.

8. The ban on plastics issued by most provinces, cities, and regions in China does not make clear requirements for degradable plastics, and the industry is in urgent need of standards and certification. If it is not clear, it is considered that all biodegradable, photosensitizer degradation, and water-degradable plastics all meet the requirements.
